Essence of Humour – 17 Short Stories

Essence of HumourYesterday, I received an email asking if I’d like to join the Alfie Dog Fiction Reader Panel. The panel is restricted to twelve people (with any other interested parties held on a waiting list) and as a member I would be sent a free book every six weeks and after reading this, expected to post a review on Amazon and Goodreads. As you can imagine, I didn’t have to be asked twice. Within a few hours I had downloaded my first book, started reading it and completed it today, before posting my review. And so, et voilà:

Stories to make you smile is the subtitle for Essence of Humour, an eclectic mix of short stories presented by Alfie Dog Fiction.

There is a distinctive international flavour to this book with authors originating from around the world to produce well-written, amusing and skilfully crafted tales with a twist. Despite this, not all of the stories were to my taste, but with 17 to choose from there were many others to keep me entertained. The subject matter was as diverse as a husband with a nifty way of curbing his wife’s spending, to a hitman with the personal touch, and this duly sat alongside the barroom anecdotes of an international crew of space warriors working to protect the galaxy from alien invasion. My personal favourite was Signs, by Clive Gresswell, not only because it was original, topical and clever, but also because it was very funny.

It also features additions from a couple of familiar names: Tracy Fells and her alter ego The Literary Pig, and Patsy Collins who hosts Words about writing and writing about words.

This anthology is ideal to dip in occasionally to seek a short distraction or, alternatively, to read in one sitting; either way, I guarantee you’ll enjoy it.

That’s great! Nice to be sharing with you. Don’t think I’ll do as well with my second review. What title have you elected as your first book?
