Back to Basics . IIThere’s been a lot of talk lately on the blogs I visit regularly about poor stats and how these may be improved upon. In true bandwagon style, I thought I’d jump aboard and use this as an evaluation period for my own blog: examine my progress and development, if you will.

It’s said that one of the most basic and fundamental ways to increase the number of readers to your site, and keep them coming back for more, is to post engaging content, regularly — that’s right … REGULARLY! More frequently than every 2 – 3 weeks?

Yes!

Schucks!

Caught me bang to rights on that one, then. If my recent performance is anything to go by, I’m undeniably guilty of shirking the first golden rule.

I used to be more conscientious and timely but have lately become disheartened, now my blog posts seem to revolve entirely around the labours of writing. I’ve had little success to speak of that warrants giving advice and there are already plenty of sites out there articulating perfectly well the trials and tribulations of writing, without my contribution.

I’m sick of constantly whining about my shortcomings, and although I’m happy to congratulate others on their success — it’s great to see writers being rewarded for consistent hard work — it can become tiresome when post after post mirrors mini-award ceremonies, with self-congratulatory pats on the back. That said, I’ll be singing with all the gusto of Jayne McDonald on board a cruise ship, should success come my way.

I feel I’ve lost sight of my original intention for starting this blog, which was to attract a like-minded audience by writing witty material I would enjoy reading myself and, simultaneously, hone my writing skills. Instead, I’ve allowed myself to be dragged down into the mire of competitive writing in an attempt to prove to myself, as well as others, that I can write.

The time has come to get back to basics, recapture the joy and escape the tedium and, with any luck, engage my followers in the process: more wit and less wittering, so to speak. In the next couple of months I intend to revamp my site, adding content that will hopefully attract a variety of readers and make people laugh, again — or, at least, smile — just as I used to do (according to loyal subscribers) in the early days.

    Good for you, Julie. I’m sure you’re right in that it’s about good content, not techy tags and SEO, nor marketing blurb either. Keep going! I’ll look forward to next week.

      You can invest in as much sound marketing as you like but if the content is poor, readers will soon realise this and not bother making a return visit.
